Food & Nutrition is part of the design technology curriculum.

We at Diss high school believe in offering students access to a Design and technology curriculum that enables them to develop a range of practical knowledge and skills that will prepare them for following a path in technical and practical futures.

We aim to:

  • Nurture independence
  • Develop problem solving skills
  • Build confidence
  • Highlight the importance of the planning, design and production cycles
  • Enhance practical skills
  • Capture interests and imagination
  • Drive students to have pride in their work
  • Encourage students set high standards for themselves
  • Strive for quality and success
  • Inspire an enjoyment for our subject.

Key Stage 3

We aim to give pupils the opportunity to explore the nutritional value of food and the sources and functions of nutrients.

Allowing pupils to investigate how to achieve a balanced diet using ideas such as the ‘eatwell plate’ and how to make simple adaptations to recipes to follow current dietary guidelines. Pupils are encouraged to make the links between their own food choices, diet and long-term health.

We aim to encourage pupils to use a range of ingredients, looking more closely at sourcing, value for money, food safety, quality, ethical considerations etc. to help them make informed choices as consumers.

Pupils are given time to build and develop on the basic practical skills and processes learnt so that they are confident to make a range of food products including main meals.  Pupils are given the opportunity to work independently and show initiative and are encouraged to reflect on their own work, and learn from this.

We aim to provide challenging and enjoyable lessons in which pupils can learn effectively and engage in the subject.
